OUR APPROACH

 TO SUSTAINABLE FLORISTRY

Huldra Floral is a floral design studio specializing in sustainable floristry. Creating alluring designs with a focus on seasonal, locally sourced blooms. We believe there shouldn't be a compromise between beauty and sustainability.

Below are just a few of the many ways we as a business try to be more sustainable.

FOAM FREE

THE FUTURE OF FLORISTY

Floral Foam is an incredibly convenient single-use mechanic that's made of tiny pieces of plastic (aka micro-plastics). These tiny pieces are not only carcinogenic, but are easily washed down the drain into our waterways and disintegrate into landfills, contaminating the surrounding soil and water.

Instead we choose designs that either don't require mechanics such as floral foam or we use things like uncoated chicken wire and AgraWool. AgraWool is the newest technology replacing floral foam, made with wool rather than plastic.

LOCALLY SOURCED

FLOWERS, FOLIAGE + MORE

With every arrangement we create, we are constantly choosing locally grown blooms and locally made goods. We source much of our fresh ingredients from farmers right here in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Most of our hardgoods are made within the USA.

However, due to our short growing season here in Wisconsin it's not always possible to source 100% of our flowers locally. When we can't get local blooms, we select flowers based on these 3 categories:

- USA grown

- Rainforest Certified

- Fair Trade Certified

COMPOSTING

NATURE'S RECYCLING

Floristry, just like any industry, can create a lot of waste during normal business operations. Here at Huldra Floral, we strive to reduce that waste. Composting is a great way to reduce the amount of organic waste heading to landfills.

On our property we have 2 compost piles: Organic and Non-Organic.

Our Organic pile is reserved for flowers, foliage and food we know for sure have never been sprayed with pestocides, herbicides, and are chemical free.

Our Non-Organic pile is for flowers, foliage and food that were not likely grown under organic conditions.

PLASTIC REDUCTION

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE

So much of our industry is wrapped in plastic or made of plastic. We make a concious effort to reduse our plastic consumption by avoiding it all together. Instead, we choose materials like glass, wood, bamboo, wire, recycled cardboard, recycled paper, and compostable whenever we possibly can.

The plastic that is unavoidable is reused as many times as possible, then recycled according to our local facilities. We know the recycling system is broken, so we prioritize reducing as much as possible.

RETURN PROGRAM

WE'LL TAKE IT BACK

Pollution stems from businesses not being held accountable for the product they are producing and how they are packaging that product. If businesses took into consideration the end of life of their product, our planet would be a lot cleaner.

The Solution: Return Program. If you purchased something from us and do not have the means to properly dispose of that item when you're done with it, we will gladly accept it back. We're talking about vases, flowers, plants, arrangements and mechanics. We will make sure all organic matter is composted. Everything else is either reused here or separated and taken to the correct facilities to be recycled/disposed of. We choose to hold ourselves accountable for our products.

DONATIONS

ADVOCATE FOR OUR PLANET

Here at Huldra, our goal is to support a sustainable future. We do our best to help keep our future a bright one, but we are just one business. And to be frank, with only 1 full time person and a small team of part-time hands, we can't do it all. So we began to advocate and donate to those who can do more.

Starting in 2020, we pledged to donate at least 1% of our yearly profits to non-profit organizations doing great things for our planet. We chose to start close to home by becoming a sponsor of the Lake Pepin Legacy Alliance. We have donated each year and continue advocating for the disappearing Lake Pepin.
